About "She had some horses"
"She had some horses" is a lyrical documentary about the heart-felt connection between women and horses. The title is based on a Joy Harjo poem by the same name (used with Ms. Harjo's permission). This 48-minute documentary follows Lynne Pomeranz, award-winning equine photographer, as she leads her Wild Horse Workshop participants among the wild horses in scenic locations around New Mexico; Jackie Fleming and Sandi Claypool are profiled as founders of horse sanctuaries; Shelly Gibbs, equine body-worker and animal communicator, shares her journey to heal her horse, Copper; Rachel Waller and her eight-year old daughter, Cheyenne, join Lynne out on the public lands to see the wild horses before they disappear forever. "She had some horses" will remind you of the special bond that exists between humans and animals and will inform you of the threats to the nation's wild horses. Special appearance by Madeleine Pickens, Savings America's Mustangs, and former Governor Bill Richardson. Original score composed and performed by Mark Kashmar.
Directorial Approach: Horses--both domestic and wild--are under siege in the West and this is happening right now. "She had some horses" examines this equine crisis through the eyes of women with a passionate commitment to the horses in New Mexico. I invite you to reflect on the connections that human have with horses and to think about what we can do to make sure horses are not a forgotten "tool" of the past, but are a vital and living part of the future of the American West. I wanted to examine this issue in a more personal way, focusing on the beauty of the horses and the passion of the women, rather than the trauma of the capture and the horrors of the slaughterhouses. I believe using a lighter touch conveys the message more effectively and the screenings of this film so far have confirmed my belief. I hope you enjoy "She had some horses."
